Indifference (2008)

Indifference is a sound installation utilizing an eight-channel, narrow-band, speaker array of 5-inch, directional PA horns. The speakers are mounted on stands, allowing for easy adjustment of the speakers such that sound projection and reflection can be tuned for each space in which it is presented. Noise sources in the environment are critical for the piece and this aspect may be supplemented with motorized fans.

Our experience of sound is vastly complex. Its manifestation in our consciousness is determined by the interaction of sound waves in our environment and within our bodies. The acoustic properties of sounds in motion and the reception and processing of these waves through the hearing apparatus make us realize that listening exists on a continuum between action and passivity, between the voluntary and involuntary. In Indifference, I use the interaction of simple, gliding tone generators that are offset from one another in order to create difference tones and beating frequencies against a noise source.
