Endolith is the current phase of my investigations into graphic synthesis, incorporating my recent developments in graphic waveshaping. The computer program, realized in Max/MSP/Jitter allows the performer to navigate pixel rows of a live camera input (a USB microscope, the Bodelin ProScope HR) while color and luminance data is gathered then interpreted as sound using feedback-dependent, non-linear distortion synthesis. The process can be understood as form of moveable waveshaping with time-varying transfer functions stemming from a moving visual scan line. Mixed media works on paper are used in performance as the source of the images fed into the system, effectively being (in a loose sense) a score and (in a concrete sense) part of the performance instrument. Along with varying the position of these works on paper beneath the live camera, the performer is able to change the interpretation of the image via a multi-touch trackpad and a turntable-like spinner.
